Scope

To develop DICOM objects and services related to image guided surgery (IGS). Disseminate knowledge gained following the roadmap through workshops, conferences and special seminars.

Short Term Goals

  • Working on Image-Guided Surgery (IGS) related work items (see below)
  • Work item “Visual Light related multi-modal sensor and computed structured data”:
  • CP-2161 “Photogrammetric Model Enhancement of VL IODs”

Current Status

  • Work item “Visual Light related multi-modal sensor and computed structured data” was accepted by the DSC. Supplements derived from this work item:
    • VL Photogrammetric Camera Module

Work Items in Preparation

The following entities are discussed with respect to their relevance as DICOM work items:

  • Support for surgical reports by DICOM Structured Reports (title tbd)
  • Patient Outcome Trajectory / 3D Volume Interaction (title tbd)

Completed Supplements

  • Supp 131 Bone Mounted Implant Description Storage SOP Class
  • Supp 132 Surface Segmentation Storage SOP Class
  • Supp 134 Implantation Plan SR Document Storage SOP Class
  • Supp 138 Crestal Implant Storage SOP Class (jointly with DICOM WG 23 Dentitry)
  • Supp 154 Optical Surface Scanner Storage SOP Class

Challenges

  • The meeting at CARS was a bit to short due to the restrictions of the conference, but draw some attention by interested individuals and industry.

Opportunities

  • The digital operating room (DOR) is becoming a reality. The market potential for those institutions which bring into the OR digital systems (e.g. a surgical PACS) which conform to Standards, such as a suitable DICOM extension, is extremely high.
  • Patients will benefit from every step taken towards an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) which is embedded in a standard DOR infrastructure.
  • Surgeries are becoming more standardized, therefore intra-operative support of surgeons is easier to accomplish.

Relationship to other Standards and Standards Bodies

  • Geometric models (stl, vtk, …)
  • Electronic patient record (HL7, FHIR)
  • ISO 182 /SC2 Robots and Robotic Devices in Surgery and Medicine
  • IHE
  • SDC
  • OR.NET e.V.

Miscellaneous

Any comments referring to the Strategic Summary of WG-24 should be e-mailed to the general chair of WG-24.

Future Roadmap and Objectives (Committee Direction):

    • None.

    Past Work:

    • The last finished work was Supp 154: Optical Surface Scanner Storage SOP Class, 2011.
