Scope:

  • Development of DICOM and HL7 standards for image-related information for areas where the consistent use of HL7 and DICOM is of prime concern, and for the coordination and mutual education and understanding between the HL7 and DICOM organizations and their technical committees / working groups.
  • Imaging Integration promotes the interoperation of imaging systems and associated information systems that use HL7 standards. Imaging Integration develops standards and guidance (use cases, information structures, message and document content) related to the workflow of ordering, performing, communicating and reporting of imaging and associated data

Challenges and Opportunities (Environment):

  • Vendors and stakeholders may develop proprietary or duplicative solutions (e.g., if standards are not developed quickly enough, not communicated well enough, or not as fully developed to meet their needs)
  • Lack of consultation of imaging integration standards development projects within HL7 and with outside SDOs
  • Clinicians and other stakeholders expressing needs to apply imaging information in their clinical activities
  • Researchers and healthcare institutions require standards and APIs for Clinical Decision Support and AI/ML endeavors
  • Clinicians and hospital departments outside of traditional radiology are focusing on increased management and governance of enterprise imaging

Future Roadmap and Objectives (Committee Direction):

    • HL7 Three Year Plan items (subject to interest / resource availability)
  • Develop and support FHIR imaging-related resources – September 2018-September 2021
  • Develop imaging implementation guide, profiles, and white papers for FHIR – January 2019-May 2020
  • Potential topics include Integrated Modality Worklist (MWL), Proxy to a DICOM archive, When to use FHIR and when to use DICOMweb, Authentication/networking across a FHIR and DICOMweb ecosystem, Dose, and Applying Operations (FHIR and non-FHIR) within Imaging
  • Specialty-specific workflows (cardiovascular – echo/cath reporting, decision support, informatics; ophthalmology; etc), measurements and reports – January 2018-January 2020
  • Develop and support context-sharing between information and imaging systems (FHIRcast) – September 2018-March2020
